“SOURCING IN CHINA:  THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY”

Those of you who attended a recent dinner meeting at the Westchester Marriott heard an interesting panel discussion from Tom Canellakis, consultant, Kathleen Dyer, CPIM, from Wyeth, and Indira Mandoske, CPIM, from AmerTac.

We discovered why 71 year-old AmerTac, a privately-held firm, first moved its sourcing to Asia in the 1980’s, then assembly in Taiwan with rework of components done in Suffern, N.Y., but eventually relocated 100% of its manufacturing to China in 2002. We heard why AmerTac still retained employees in Allentown, Pennsylvania and Saddle River, New Jersey.

We heard about why Wyeth sourced one of its raw material ingredients at a fraction of the cost in China, and how quality and consistency of product can be influenced by governmental concerns, pollution, and even the upcoming Olympics.

Tom Canellakis, with over twenty years’ experience in China, discussed the fundamental issues of trust, quality and the cost of capital in China, as well as his efforts in the development of sourcing groups within China and the cost savings attributable to various tiers of the supply chain. Tom discussed sourcing strategies, the need to adapt, the role of internal and external influences, and the unique qualities of the Mandarin language.

The attendees held a lively question and answer period, with a number of individuals recounting experiences dealing with the Chinese economy, the prevalence of bribery and other back-door payments, and the need for clarity around specifications and bills of material. The panelists spoke of future opportunities having to do with value and not simply low cost.

A blog has been established in the Special Links section on our website to continue the conversation about China for those many who appeared interested.

We hope to see you at the next exciting dinner meeting!

What Can You Get from ISM-7 Counties?
By Bev Simon

ISM-7 Counties is more than just a trade association. It is more than dues and meetings. It is more than networking.

These are just some of the things I have seen as a result of my ISM-7 Counties membership.

Friendship
Who has time for developing friendships in this day and age of busy schedules, kids and work demands? I have forged two friendships with people from ISM-7 Counties and TZ APICS that have been there for the laughter, tears and joys.

Sourcing Support
The internet is a beautiful thing as a sourcing tool for working professionals, especially those in the Procurement field. It certainly has helped to put the old Thomas Register to the wayside. I have been stuck in places seeking sources for the strangest things throughout my career from cold storage freight carriers, to chicken skin & fat, to urns. Without the synergies of  ISM-7 Counties, I could never have found the necessary sources to solve challenges.

Employment and Careers
They say the best way to find a job is through networking. It is not always what you know, but who you know. I have found more positions for myself and ISM folks via knowing someone. Yes, I lead the Career Network for ISM-7 Counties, but it is more than that. It is the lead into a traditionally closed door. It is an insight from a current or former employee of how a company works. ISM-7 Counties provides those avenues to those seeking work, out of work, or potentially looking for a job change. It is not just limited to who to contact and where, it also is the overview of a company, the job description and career potential, the pluses and minuses of a firm.

Volunteerism
All non-profit organizations make it a point to promote volunteerism. ISM-7 Counties is made up of volunteers for various functions/roles, each an opportunity to challenge oneself to learn and grow. It provides something extra on one’s resume. It is fun with laughter and we share joys and concerns. It is providing more shoulders to help carry the burden when one needs it much like a brotherhood or sisterhood. Most of all, it is fun and does not take up that much time. One may not necessarily become a President of a company, but they can surely become the President of  ISM-7 Counties!

Love
Yup, love.  Talk about the best networking! Two members of ISM-7 Counties actually met through the chapter, fell in love, got married and had children while juggling their careers.

ISM-7 Counties offers more than most trade associations. It offers an opportunity – now take your pick as to which opportunity!
