Collaboration of ISM-7 Counties and Marist College School of Management – An Outlook

By: Dr. Beate Klingenberg, Assistant Professor of Management, Marist College

Understanding the complexities of global supply chains is an important prerequisite for successfully managing any firm, as manufacturing as well as service companies are increasingly integrated in a global business network. The curriculum of Marist’s School of Management reflects this need by addressing the topic in operations management and strategic management courses both on the undergraduate and graduate level. In particular on the undergraduate level, though, it is important to provide students not only with relevant concepts, but also practical examples and problems to allow them to fully understand the matter. Very often, these students come to my classes with little to no conception of what operations or supply chain management is, and then leave with the idea that this is actually exciting stuff, wanting to learn more, but not knowing exactly where to go next.

This is the point where the collaboration of ISM-7-Counties and Marist College adds exciting new opportunities. Several levels of interaction are planned, with the main focus being site-visits and internships of students at member firms. Guest lectures of supply-chain management professionals in classes or other events at Marist are also planned. From my perspective of an instructor in operations management and new ISM-7 Counties Board Member, this will enhance student learning and allow them to apply their knowledge in a real-world setting. For ISM-7 Counties professionals, on the other hand, this is an excellent opportunity to interact with junior and senior level students to share their knowledge and search for new talent.

I am looking forward to supporting this cooperation as the liaison between the two entities and to seeing it grow!
